The
image of the painting describes lilies growing from surging ocean.
The ocean means the mundane world, constantly fighting for conflict
that comes from various reasons including cultural and religious
differences.
Lily symbolizes purity and its color blue means Heaven in Christianity.
The painting presents peacefully growing flowers by listening
to harmonizing music.
This painting was especially produced for this performance to
carry on our hope to be peaceful in harmony.

The
Magic Flute
2003
Watercolor and gouache on paper
Specifically
produced for the performance, ˇ°the Magic Fluteˇ± in Korean version,
the painting presents the most common images found in Korean folk
arts of the 18 th century. Tiger and magpies are stemmed from Korean
folk art called ˇ°Min Hwa.ˇ± The style of the tree and the images
on the background, such as sun and clouds, are originated from the
images in folding screens that are commonly found in the 18 th century
in Korea . The artist modified and combined the traditional images
into those of more personal to compose the images in the painting
of the flute unique. The red and blue-colored string with tassels,
tied the upper part of the flute, is one of the implements used
in Korean traditional marriage. All images described in the painting
are matched to the theme of the performance: transferring the situation
from that the original performance took place in Germany in the
18 th century to that of Korea in the same era. |

The
painting presents a human head containing various religious symbols
that are squeezed and connected to together. The religious symbols
consist of those in Buddhism (lotus meaning compassion), Christianity
(descending dove meaning Holy Sprit), Taoism (symbol of Yin-Yang),
Jainism (bowl), Islam (star and crescent), Judaism (menorah),
Hinduism (fire representing destruction and creation of the Universe),
Zoroastrianism (sacred fire), and Shinto (torii), Although the
doctrines of the religions are different from each other, they
provide us one meaning-together having a better life.

The Marriage of Figaro

The
image on the cover of the pamphlet for the performance, ˇ°the Marriage
of Figaroˇ± presents the amalgam of the East and the West. The profile
of the figure describes the westerner while the frontal face delineates
the easterner. It exhibits a combined image of two different types
of faces featuring their characteristics: deep eye sockets and a
high nose of the westerner and big chick bones of the easterner.
The entire form of the work, describing two faces connected together,
symbolizes indispensably close relationship between the East and
the West. |
